General information only

The content of this site is patient education. It describes what produces the fold beside the mouth, how the three parts of the line are told apart, and what treatment costs in time, recovery and risk. It is not a diagnosis, it is not a treatment recommendation for any individual, and it does not create a doctor-patient relationship.

No substitute for examination

How much of your own fold is movement, how much is volume lost from the cheek and how much is descent, and what your smile would do if the muscles beside your mouth were quieted, are findings that can only be established by examining you. Reading this site cannot substitute for that, and a plan made from a website alone is a plan made without information.

Results vary and are not guaranteed

Individual results differ, the effect of a relaxing treatment wears off over months rather than lasting, restored volume is gradually redistributed, and no clinician and no website can guarantee an outcome. Any statement that appears to promise one should be treated with suspicion wherever you encounter it. The face continues to change after any treatment, and further treatment may be needed later.

If something is wrong after treatment

If you have had treatment to this area and develop difficulty breathing or swallowing, a spreading rash, or weakness that extends beyond the face, seek emergency care immediately. Severe pain in the cheek, paleness or a mottled change in the skin, or any change in vision after a filler, should be reported to the treating team at once rather than waited out. A smile that has become uneven, or a mouth corner that no longer lifts, should be reviewed rather than observed at home.
